I use treatment modalities that are part of a strengths-based tool kit to explore coping strategies and determine practical solutions.
This is a goal-oriented approach involves taking a slice of your life, specific situations, that are triggering negative thoughts. During this process, there is the opportunity to not only explore the impact of specific negative thoughts, but to also understand any distortions. CBT is a powerful tool that enhances your awareness about your thought life and how to manage them to your benefit. CBT takes effort, however as a treatment, willing clients can manage life favourably for the long term.
This is a strength-based approach where the client-therapist relationship is fostered as a partnership. The strategies I use are to notice exceptions to the problem and highlight solutions, while drawing upon your experiences to uncover your resiliency, problem solving skills, attitudes that foster change, values and all the things that are within you that will contribute to your best hopes and preferred future.
Coaching is a here and now approach in that the goals are about addressing things that impact in the moment There are five key areas to consider developing life skills that include the self, family, community, employment, and leisure. Life skills coaching is a problem-solving approach that acknowledges the changes a client wishes to make to improve outcomes and feelings. Life skills involves thinking skills, social skills, and emotional skills. The problem is defined, ideas generated, decisions made and implemented and then a time is given to evaluate the outcomes. Coaching draws upon a client’s personal strengths and helps the client to navigate towards practical changes and improvements. This process is highly engaging, focused on adult learning principals. Clients may want to work on being organized, learning how to learn, dealing with money, improving health outcomes, job search etc.
